World War II and three decades of conflict have left Iraq with a significant landmine, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and abandoned ordnance problem. A 2005-2006 survey reported mine/ERW contamination in the southern, south-center, and northern regions. The Kurdistan region is one of the most seriously mine-contaminated areas, with thousands of tactical minefields on the borders with Iran and Turkey, and further mine contamination along the Green Line. The Government of Iraq faces further challenges in dealing with mines and UXO, particularly with insurgent use of improvised explosive devices against Iraqi forces, civilians, and Coalition personnel.
